Believe me, I hear it all the time. I even caught it from my mom when I told her the name of our new company.
“Robert... envy is not a good thing...”

My wife and I have two beautiful kids named Titus and Evelyn (we call her Evie) and I wanted to use their names in the title somewhere. I tossed around “Titulyn Graphics” and “Evelus Graphics”, but nothing seemed to fit. Then “Eve-us” finally rolled off my tongue. At the same time I was rebuilding a computer and noticed the nVIDIA® video graphics card and everything just clicked. “nVIUS Graphics” was born.
I could be clever and say that people will be “envious” of your new logo, or “envious” of your new promotional products, but my mom was right; envy really is a bad thing. The Bible tells us about it in the book of Titus (ironically):
“Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient.
We were misled by others and became slaves to
many wicked desires and evil pleasures.
Our lives were full of evil and envy.
We hated others, and they hated us.” -Titus 3:3
Every person was born with a sinful nature, that is every person was born knowing how to sin. You don’t have to teach a child how to lie, or disobey, or want something that’s not theirs. But there is good news in the next four verses:
“But then God our Savior showed us His kindness and love.
He saved us, not because of the good things we did,
but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins
and gave us new life through the Holy Spirit.
He generously poured out the Spirit upon us
because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did.
He declared us not guilty because of His great kindness.
And now we know that we will inherit eternal life.” -Titus 3:4-7
Sure, envy can be a bad thing, but every time I look up at our sign or see our logo I can be reminded that we don’t have to be a slave to envy and jealousy through a relationship with Jesus. We just have to admit that we are a sinner, believe that Jesus is God’s Son, that he lived on this earth, died on the cross, and was raised to life again, and commit ourselves to following Him. It’s that relationship that makes our job a joy, makes each day worth living, and gives us hope for the future.
